The folktales of the Brothers Grimm, published in the 19th century, are quite different from the popular children’s versions known today.
This project showcases the work of three prominent illustrators who brought a new light to the Grimm brothers’ tales:
Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen, and Maurice Sendak.

Each of these illustrators offers a unique approach to visualizing the Grimm stories, creating a distinct visual world that conveys a different atmosphere and evokes diverse emotional experiences in the reader.

ABOUT

For the catalog design, I chose to work with the typeface Greta, designed by Michal Sahar and Peter Biľak (Typotheque / HaGilda, 2024). Greta’s classic yet contemporary character allowed me to subtly evoke a fairytale-like atmosphere throughout the catalog—without feeling heavy-handed or overly stylized. It brings a soft, narrative tone that supports both the content and the overall mood of the project.

Inspired by the German origins of the Brothers Grimm, I designed the catalog logo using the letter “G” in the Fraktur style — a historic Gothic script. A diamond shape in the center links the logo to the catalog’s decorative elements.

The decorative elements are based on clean geometric shapes, maintaining a consistent visual language throughout the catalog — including half-frames, diamonds, and dots, all arranged in a minimal yet distinctive style.
